Answer: Splines serves as a rotational and an anti-rotational tool that allows you to turn the diverter valve on and off without the knob pivoting on its own. Yes, the number of teeth on the old cartridge must be the same as those on the replacement shower diverter cartridge. Reason being, there are grooves on the underside of the handle cap that must mate with those on the diverter. The handle cap will not fit if the count is not the same.

On the advice on counting the notches: you can use a pen to mark the point where you will start and count on from there.
