To unscrew your existing tap cartridge, you will need to turn it anti-clockwise. Likewise, to install the new one, you will need to turn it clockwise to screw it in. For tap cartridges that don't unscrew easily, try using a hammer to tap the end of the spanner. This will create a sharp jolt which will break the cartridge free of the limescale, grime and and rust that has been holding it in the valve.

Do be careful when tapping the end of the spanner with the hammer as it could dislodge the tap or shower from the wall, basin or sink and can even dislodge it from the connected hot and cold water pipes if it moves enough.
