The Basics of a Thermostatic Cartridge
A thermostatic cartridge plays an integral function in how comfortable a shower can be. The device is responsible for mixing water coming from a boiler and a cold storage tank to an ideal temperature. A thermostatic cartridge can either be a push-fit or a screw-in. Its material range from brass to polymer to ceramic.

Thermostatic Wax Element
Temperature regulation is conducted by a small flat diaphragm capsule sitting quietly in the barrel of a thermostatic cartridge. The thermo-element contains wax susceptible to thermal expansion, breathing to moderate the influx of water in two extremes to produce a single median temperature determined by the shower user.

Stem and Splines
A stem is found on the top part of a cartridge barrel. It ascertains the total length of the cartridge and the stretch between the collar to the tap head.

The spline is located above the stem. Splines not only work as an anti-rotational tool, but it also allows ease when rotating a bath tap control handle. Cartridges can have a spline count beginning 18 to 32. Getting the right cartridge replacement spare part involves getting the spline teeth number right, or the cartridge will not fit the valve handle with exactness.
