The THDV698 is a thermostatic cartridge assembly that includes a spring and a thermostat capsule. Made of brass and is geared with two o-rings, it is compatible with showers from before 2010.

Cartridges, Wax Elements, and How the Whole Apparatus Works
A cartridge is housed inside a shower or tap valve. A cartridge administers or stops water flow when a shower is turned on or off. It is commonly made out of brass or polymer. It comes with rubber or plastic o-rings to prevent leakage. Over time due to wear and tear, the o-rings are inclined to fail and will require to be changed.

Thermostatic wax elements were first used in automobiles. During the 1970s, these thermostat capsules were applied to the plumbing and heating system. It is situated inside a cartridge to allow a shower user to regulate the water temperature with just a twist of the shower valve’s knob.

The small capsule generates mechanical energy from heat energy. The wax and copper contained within contracts or expands as water temperature decreases or increases. And the pin moves up as the wax expands and pushes down when the wax contracts.

All three pieces – cartridge, thermostatic wax element, and valve housing – combined is called a thermostatic control valve. As a safety precaution in the event of volatile hot or cold water pressure, TMV accredited valves and cartridges will shut off automatically to prevent scalding or thermal shock.

Measuring a Cartridge
Identifying the right cartridge replacement part for your shower is important to preempt unnecessary leaks or issues. One of the many ways to determine which cartridge is right for your valve is by measuring it. Here are a few steps on how to measure a thermostatic cartridge.
1. Figure out the size of the valve. Generally, if a valve is ½ inch BSP (British Standard Pipe) the thread will measure approximately 21mm. If the valve is stated as ¾ inch BSP, the thread size is estimated to be 26mm.
2. Measure the cartridge length. A perfect corresponding cartridge length will match the valve snuggly averting any leaks.
3. The cartridge nut is the part where a spanner can be used to take the cartridge out or to reinstall it. It is located adjacent to the stem. This cartridge part should also be measured.
4. Splines. Discovering the number of splines is crucial. If the spline count is imprecise, fitting the valve housing will likely be improbable. Majority of cartridges have a spline count of 20. But the numbers can vary between 18 and 32.
5. Another thing to keep in mind is if the original cartridge has a shroud, the replacement part should also have a shroud.
