The GF78893 is a “universal” thermostatic cartridge. While being considered universal, these cartridges will not intrinsically fit in all types of shower valves as the valves come in different sizes. It being “universal” means it can be suitable for most, but not all, shower valves. Hence, it is important to know the measurements of the specific cartridge you need.

Determining Cartridge Measurements
To be sure if the GF78893 is compatible with your shower mixer valve, extract the cartridge and take a photo to show your spare part provider. Or, identify the size of the valve. A half inch BSP (British Standard Pipe) has a standard thread diameter of about 21 millimeters. A three-quarter inches (¾”) BSP valve has a thread width measuring 26 millimeters.

The overall length of the cartridge must correspond with the depth of the valve. Part of the length also includes the cartridge stem. If it is too short for the valve, water will leak from the valve housing. If too long, the valve handle cannot be assembled correctly. The replacement part must fit the housing just right.

A threaded cartridge will call for a replacement part that is screw-in. A push-fit cartridge, some has a grub screw and others a threaded collar, will require a spare part that has the same fitment. Also, see if the cartridge has a shroud piece that sits atop a central collar. It is imperative to purchase the equivalent cartridge.

Cartridges have a nut – either rounded or angled – found on the stem base. This part is where the spanner grips onto to pry the cartridge out or to tighten it back into the valve.

The spare part should have the same number of o-rings. External o-rings are placed on the cartridge barrel. These silicone or rubber rings prevent water from escaping the barrel. A cartridge will have at least one o-ring.
