Thermostatic cartridges contain a thermostatic wax element inside it. Copper and wax that expands and contracts as the temperature fluctuates are held within the capsule. When temperature lowers the wax shrinks; it balloons when the water temperature goes up. To regulate temperature for a good shower, the pin in the capsule moves up and down based on the condition of the wax.
