Repairing a Leaking Tap
Identifying the cause of a leak is the initial key to correctly fixing a tap. Broken cartridges, worn out o-rings or washers can be straightforwardly addressed. However, it is best to call a professional plumber to tackle complicated causes such as a corroding valve seat.

To replace the LB2750 thermostatic cartridge, shut off water supplies. Remove the tap handle and shroud. Undo the cartridge out using a spanner – or in case of the Lefroy Brooks Thermostatic Cartridge LB2750 which does not contain threads; unscrew the brass collar and use a pair of pliers to pull the cartridge out. Insert the new cartridge in the valve unit and restore the brass collar, the shroud, and the tap handle.

Causes Leading to a Leaking Bathtub Tap: Do you need to replace the LB2750 thermostatic cartridge?

Due to sustained use, a bathtub tap is inclined to leak at some point in time. It comes as a result of the breaking down of worn-out hardware parts; namely, the cartridge - such as the LB-LB2750, the O-rings, washers, or seals. Also, the valve unit itself can undergo corrosion.

Cause #1: The Cartridge
Cartridges are either made of polymer or brass. The LB2750 thermostatic cartridge, like all thermostatic cartridges, regulates water temperature. There are a number of reasons that can cause it to fail. Cracks can manifest on the cartridge barrel which leads to water seeping out of the valve unit.

Cause #2: O-Rings, Washers, and Seals
An O-ring, also known as a toric joint, is used as leak prevention; sealing water flow in the cartridge. Its circumference is rounded and chunkier than washers. A cartridge can have two or more o-rings. LB2750 has three outer O-rings. The rings can withstand external and internal pressure in a plumbing system. Over time, the o-rings in a cartridge will wear out and will cause water to leak.

A washer is an attenuated metal or plastic plate with a hole in the middle. It fits in-between flat surfaces. The washer inside a valve facilitates the opening and closing of the tap. Friction occurs as the tap is perpetually turned on and off which runs the washer down. As it loosens on the valve seat, water will leak.

An inlet seal connects tap hardware together to preempt leaks. Seals are often made of rubber. It can deteriorate from extreme water pressure and limescale debris.

Cause #3: Corrosion
The valve seat is located at the base of a tap. Leaks around the base will ensue when the valve starts to deteriorate of corrosion.

There are several causes why a valve seat can corrode: too low or too high water pH level, the presence of iron bacteria or sulfate, excessive levels of salt or dissolved oxygen, sedimentary residue, electrochemical reactions, improper installation, or high rate of water flow that results to hydraulic wear.
