Know Your Shower Spares: MX ZKN Thermostatic Cartridge

MX ZKN is the thermostatic cartridge needed for Atmos Select 3 Way concentric shower valves. Read ahead for cartridge information and fitting instructions.

Shower valves are typically equipped with one to three cartridges. These are the flow cartridge, the diverter cartridge and the thermostatic cartridge which is what the MX ZKN is.

A thermostatic cartridge works by taking incoming hot and cold water through its gauze filters. The filters strain limescale and dirt as water passes. This MX shower spare has two filters.

Inside the cartridge lays the wax thermo-element. The bottom part of it can be seen protruding out of the MK ZKN barrel (Please refer to the third photo in the gallery). The thermo-element mixes hot and cold water together. Its aim is to produce the exact water temperature desired by the shower user.

Factors that can harm the cartridge and its parts include poor water quality, high water pressure and wear and tear.

Make sure the parts you remove are returned in the same position during reassembly.

– Switch off the shower’s hot and cold water supply lines and pressure. This is a precaution that will prevent accidental water flow or the cartridge shooting out of the valve by itself.

– There is a retaining screw under each of the shower valve’s handles. Use an Allen key to loosen or remove the screw. Separate the handle from the shower valve.

– Remove the parts under the handle: the cover plate, the chrome cover seals, temperature stop, the thermostatic cartridge retaining ring and the cartridge.

– Apply a thin layer of plumbing grease on the replacement MX ZKN thermostatic cartridge. Slip the new spare part in the shower valve. Secure it in place by putting back the retaining ring.

– Reconstruct the valve by returning the cover seals, the stop ring, the cover plate and handle.
