Troubleshooting Shower Valves with Crosswater Thermostatic Cartridge TCG1210FA1

By design, a shower valve equipped with a thermostatic cartridge should deliver about 2.5 gallons of temperature regulated water per minute (GPM) at a rate of 80 pounds per square inch (PSI). But if your shower renders less water output or volatile water temperature there are a few things to check in order to troubleshoot a faulty valve.

A. Lackadaisical Water Outflow
Weak water flow can be sudden or gradual. When slow water flow is weak, checking pressure from hot and cold water supply pipes is important. A pressure gauge will tell if pressure coming from the main water supply is optimal.

Aside from water pressure, another cause of weak water flow is either the valve’s diverter or its aerator. The diverter should be positioned to solely supply the tap spout. On the other hand, the water flow can be obstructed by mineral debris buildup in the aerator.

In a scenario of a gradual weakening of water flow, there are two things to look out for: the valve opening and the cartridge. A limiter that popped out of the proper adjustment will hinder the valve from opening right. Detach the valve handle to check and reseat the limiter.

A blocked cartridge can also result in slow water flow. Remove the Crosswater TCG1210FA1 thermostatic cartridge to check for any signs of dirt or hard water mineral buildup. (Please check out our hard water map.)

B. Deficiency in Hot or Cold Water Outflow
An imbalance between hot and cold water caused by poor temperature regulation may be found in the supply lines or the TCG1210FA1 thermostatic cartridge itself. Check both water supplies if it is operating without irregularities. If it is normal, it means the cause of weak water supply is the cartridge.
