Cartridges are typically made with a brass outer shell. Showers can use 1 to 3 cartridges: thermostatic cartridges, flow cartridges, and diverter cartridges.

– Thermostatic cartridges, like this Burlington thermostatic cartridge, is for regulating the shwoer water temperature. This is possible through a wax thermostat element in the cartridges the moves up and down similar with a piston. Hot and cold water goes in the cartridge where the thermo-element mixes it to produce the temperature determined by the shower user.

– Flow cartridges are in charge of opening and shutting off water flow usually done by the ceramic core found in most cartridges of this type. The ceramic is one of the hardest and most durable materials out there.

– Diverter cartridges, just as the name suggests, facilitate water flow from the shower/bath filler to the shower head. Most of the time, this type of cartridges do not have a brass barrel but a ceramic barrel. There are two-way diverters to as many as a 5- or 6-way diverter (which are used in showers with jets).
