Is it time to replace the steam shower’s 3-way diverter cartridge?

These are the three of the most common problems that indicate the diverter cartridge is about to wear out.

Once every few years the shower valve part will require a new replacement. Limescale (especially if you live in an area with high levels of hard water) and wear and tear are among the most prominent factors that bring about the end of a 3-way diverter cartridge’s life span.

1. Leaks
Is one outlet of the shower leaking while another is in use? One of the causes of this might be a build-up of limescale in and around the 3-way diverter cartridge. Another is a deteriorated O-ring. Leaks can also come from the spindle which leads to water seeping from the diverter handle.

2. Inability to Redirect Water Flow
When water flow stubbornly refuses to move to a different outlet it can be due to a blocked diverter cartridge.

3. Poor Water Flow Rate
The ideal PSI for a good water flow rate is about 60 to 65 PSI. A less than normal flow may indicate the diverter cartridge may need to be replaced.

Steam Shower Repair Recommendation
Grease the O-rings of the replacement diverter cartridge with the proper silicone-based lubricant. This will help the new part squeeze and seal in the valve.
