Shower Spare Part Help: Installing Bristan 1901 MK1 Thermostatic Cartridge

Before fitting the replacement thermostatic cartridge in the Bristan 1901 MK1 shower valve please close the hot and cold water supply.

1. Prise out the white centre cap (middle of the cross head control knob). This will reveal the retaining screw.

2. Undo the screw and take it out together with the small washer. Remove the temperature control knob and the handle adaptor.

3. Remember the position of the temperature stop ring. This part will have to be returned in the same position when putting the parts back together. Slide-out the temperature stop ring and the washer. You can now remove the flow control handle.

4. Use a 30mm socket or spanner against the nut of the faulty Bristan 1901 thermostatic cartridge and turn it anti-clockwise. This will separate the cartridge from the valve. Make sure to remove the complete cartridge assembly from the valve down to the spring.

5. Assemble the replacement Bristan 1901 MK1 thermostatic cartridge. Apply a small amount of silicone grease on all the cartridge O-rings. Please refer to the “Other Items” section of the page for the grease.

6. Slowly but surely introduce the complete thermostatic cartridge in the Bristan shower valve. Screw the cartridge clockwise and tighten using the spanner. Do not overtighten.

7. Put the flow control and temperature control handle back in place: steps 1 to 3 in reverse order.

Question: I took out the Bristan cartridge and it is stuffed with white limescale. Is replacing the whole thermostatic cartridge needed?
