– You can spray a loosening agent (WD-40) and leave it soaking overnight to soften the minerals. See if this will work by trying to remove the nut again.

– You can pour boiling water (or point a hairdryer in the hottest setting) over the retaining nut. Hopefully, the heat will cause the nut to expand and break it free from the limescale.
