Q: Can water quality affect the cartridge?
A: Yes. Hard water can cause mineral buildup in the Franke Zurich cartridge deteriorating its condition. This is among the reason why cartridges fail.

Hard Water and the Condition of Your Franke Zurich Tap Cartridge

When water percolates, or passes through, limestone and chalk deposits it morphs into hard water. Hard water has high amounts of mineral content and holds magnesium and calcium bicarbonates, sulfates, and chlorides. Calcium and magnesium molecules tend to react with soaps made from high fatty acids. The reaction materializes into an insoluble gelatinous substance, making soap harder to lather, which leads to wastage. Present-day detergents contain lower fatty acids, so, this effect does not affect its usage.

Iron in its oxidized ferric formation can also be present. A rust coloured discolouration on fabrics and other surfaces is a sign of ferrous iron content in the water. Over a period of time, hard water can disintegrate fabrics faster.

Lowering Water Hardness
Water hardness can be measured using instruments such as testing strips and digital testing kits. A small amount of EDTA solution is dropped on a water source sample. The colour changes in accordance with the level of calcium and magnesium. Determining the amount of mineral content in hard water is calculated using a mathematical formula.

The process of softening is applied to treat water hardness. This is done through reverse osmosis and nanofiltration (NF). At the same time, there are water softeners available in retail. These softeners work by substituting hard water sulfates with sodium and can alter the taste of the water. Such a solution is not suitable for households required to lessen sodium intake.

With soft water, the durability of water handling equipments – boilers, pipes, and valves – are enhanced.
